Merz Down Plays Speculation Over Trump's Health
"First of all, based on my encounters with President Trump, I have no reason to doubt his health," Merz remarked during a press briefing in Berlin when questioned about recent reports from the press that questioned Trump's suitability for office.
"He will turn 80 in June, but I have the impression that he is fully capable of performing his duties," the German chancellor further commented.
"I have no indication whatsoever that this should not be the case," Merz emphasized.
Since assuming office as German chancellor in May 2025, Merz has maintained frequent communication with Trump. The two leaders have convened several times and engaged in multiple phone conversations to address matters concerning transatlantic relations and global security issues.
